The suffering of the Spanish hunting dogs reaches its yearly climax - where's the media?

February marks the end of the rabbit hunting season in Spain. It's also the time when the hunters want to get rid of their dogs. More than 100,000 hunting dogs, mainly galgos and podencos, will be abandoned or torturously killed. Most EU citizens are completely unaware of the tragedy. It's not surprising, because the plight of these dogs almost never gets any media attention. Especially the Podencos, also called the Great Forgotten are practically never mentioned. All changes for the better start with mass awareness. Let's hope this year will be the year when the mass media will start covering animal rights issues.

Etenkin podenco - "suuri unohdettu" - tosiaankin on täysin unohdettu.

Torture is not culture

The Spanish hunters (galgueros) want to raise one million signatures to request UNESCO to class hunting with galgos as World Cultural Heritage. The horrible fact is that each year, after the hunting season, more than 60,000 hunting dogs are abandoned or tortured to death in Spain. Before being dumped or killed, the galgos spend their lives in unbelievable neglect and misery. It would therefore be a complete disaster if hunting with galgos would become a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. A petition has been made to call upon UNESCO to reject any application. Please sign and share widely – TORTURE IS NOT CULTURE!

Animal Welfare an important theme in the European Elections 2014 – Please give your voice for the animals!

Up until recent years, very few EU citizens have been aware of the shocking truth about animal cruelty in the EU. With the rise of social media, more and more EU citizens are daily witnessing the atrocities against animals that are going on in many EU member states. The concern for animal welfare issues can also be seen in the increasing number of animal welfare parties in the EU member states, the latest contribution being the Swedish Animal Welfare Party, which was founded at the beginning of 2014. The animal welfare parties in the following countries have their own candidates in the EU elections: Cyprus, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands and United Kingdom.

One of the major concerns for preoccupied EU-citizens is the total lack of EU legislation for dogs, cats and other companion animals resulting in abandonment, systematic torture and killing of millions of animals. The ongoing massacre of stray dogs in Romania involving crime, corruption and unscrupulous misuse of EU funds has gained publicity, and has for many EU-citizens been an eye-opener.

An animal welfare campaign for the European Elections:

ESDAW (European Society of Dog and Animal Welfare)

These campaign pages have lists of candidates who are committed to working for animal welfare.

PLEASE GIVE YOUR VOICE FOR THE ANIMALS – THEY NEED IT MORE THAN EVER!

Romania gets millions of euros in EU funding to take care of the problem of stray dogs and rabies provided that it is done in a cost effective and humane way. The situation in Romania now: The dogs are killed in the most horrific ways - they are burnt or buried alive, strangled, poisoned, hanged or dumped in landfills packed like sardines in cramped cages – sometimes in sight of children. Those who are not killed on the spot get shipped to horrendous "concentration camps" where they after a few weeks are beaten to death or poisoned if they haven’t already died of cold, hunger and thirst. Dog catchers and death “shelters” get about 300 euros per killed dog. No wonder that the Romanian mafia wants the dog problem to persist! According to all researches the most effective and cheapest way to deal with the dog problem would be to neuter and spay the dogs. The EU couldn’t care less about the dogs or the wasted money - your and my money! More info:

Cat and dog fur trade in China – a horror beyond belief

4/1/2014

Each year, millions of dogs and cats are skinned in China their furs being used for coat collars, boot and glove linings, accessories, trinkets and toys.

Conditions on Chinese fur farms are appalling, and the animals are subject to unimaginable acts of systematic brutality and cruelty. The foxes, minks, rabbits, dogs and cats live crammed together in tiny wire cages with no shelter from rain, cold weather or the scorching sun, and the animals are deprived of even the most basic care. The animals show signs of extreme anxiety and pathological behaviours, such as self-mutilation and infanticide.

Looking for a Christmas gift for someone who loves animals and who already "has got everything"?

A very good idea is to donate for animals, for instance dog shelters or animal welfare organisations.

No pets as Christmas gifts, please!

Do not give a pet as a Christmas gift! A pet is a life-long commitment, not a toy!
