Australia is on fire, but its PM refuses to address climate change

Since the Australian bushfires started in September 2019, more than 6 million hectares of land have burned, more than 100,000 residents in the South-Eastern parts of the country have had to leave their homes, at least 24 people have died and dozens are missing. Half a billion animals have been killed, including native wildlife and farm animals. At least 25,000 koalas are believed to have burned to death in the wildfires, which can be the end of the entire species. Record-shattering heat (Penrith 48.9 Celsius and Canberra 43.6 Celsius), draught and strong winds have exacerbated the fires.

Australia’s climate has warmed by more than one degree Celsius over the past century, causing an increase in the frequency and intensity of heat waves and droughts. The year 2019 was the hottest on record for Australia, with temperatures 1.52 Celsius above the long-term average taken between 1961 and 1990. The second hottest year was 2013, followed by 2005, 2018 and 2017. Bushfires occur frequently in Australia during the heatwaves, but this Summer’s inferno is unprecedented. Scientists agree that the climate change intensify the wildfires, and this is only the beginning.

The UN Climate Change Conference in Madrid in December 2019 was a catastrophe. Large polluting countries, including Australia, knocked down citizens' climate concerns and opposed common rules and ultimately blocked a global deal. During the wildfires, Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison has made clear that there will be no change to the country’s current climate change policies.

There are no words.
