The municipal shelters are overcrowded with animals in appalling condition, starving, without any medical care. Cats are not valued, and they’re considered to be vermin. They’re catched and injured by dogs and tortured and killed by private persons and authorities, mostly by poisoning. Spaying and neutering is considered to be unnatural by the Greeks, and the result is hoards of unwanted kittens.
