Plastic: A useful material that has become pollution

Plastic is one of the most versatile materials ever created. Lightweight, durable, and inexpensive, it is used in everything from medical equipment and electronics to food packaging that helps keep products fresh and reduces food waste, which has a major impact on the environment. Modern life would be difficult to imagine without it.
 
The problem is not just plastic as a material, but above all the throwaway culture, littering, and inadequate recycling. Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic waste enter the environment, where it can remain for decades or even centuries. Rather than fully biodegrading, plastic gradually breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces known as microplastics and nanoplastics.
 
Scientists have also detected microplastics in human tissues and organs and throughout the animal kingdom as well, from fish and seabirds to whales and insects. While the health effects are not yet fully understood, the spread of plastic particles through humans and wildlife is worrying.

Why plastic ends up where it does not belong

One of the main causes of plastic pollution globally is poor waste management. Plastic waste that is not collected, recycled, or properly disposed of often ends up in the environment.
 
Littering and illegal dumping also contribute significantly to plastic pollution. Plastic discarded on streets, beaches, rivers, and open land is often carried by wind and water into waterways and oceans. Single-use plastics such as bottles, bags, food packaging, straws, and takeaway containers are particularly problematic because they are used briefly but can persist in the environment even for centuries.
 
Lost or abandoned nets, ropes, lines, and traps—so-called ghost gear—from commercial fishing are a major source of marine plastic pollution and can continue trapping and killing wildlife for years.

Microplastics originate from a variety of sources, including synthetic clothing, vehicle tires, paints, and degrading plastic products enter rivers, soils, and oceans. Microplastics are also created when larger plastic items gradually fragment into tiny particles as they are exposed to sunlight, waves, and weathering in oceans, rivers, and other environments.

Why plastic pollution is concentrated in the Global South

According to research published in 2024, the countries generating the largest amounts of plastic pollution are India (9.3 million tonnes per year), Nigeria (3.5 million tonnes), Indonesia (3.4 million tonnes), China (2.8 million tonnes), and Pakistan (2.6 million tonnes). In many of these countries, large numbers of people lack access to waste collection services, often leaving them with no option but to dump or burn their waste. Improving waste management would significantly reduce plastic pollution while also protecting the health and well-being of some of the world's poorest communities.
 
Major multinational corporations continue to flood markets with disposable plastic packaging. Brand audits conducted around the world have repeatedly identified companies such as The Coca Cola Company, PepsiCo, Nestlé, Danone and Altria among the world's largest sources of identifiable branded plastic waste. Environmental groups argue that these corporations must do far more to reduce their dependence on single-use plastics and take responsibility for the pollution associated with their products.

Plastic waste exports and health risks in the Global South

Wealthier countries have historically exported parts of their plastic waste to lower-income countries, often labeled as “recyclable.” Although stricter regulations in recent years have improved the situation and reduced global waste shipments, the practice has not disappeared. Waste exports still continue, often shifting to new destination countries.
 
In places with limited recycling infrastructure, much of this waste cannot be properly processed and ends up dumped, burned, or leaking into the environment. This creates serious health risks for people working in informal waste systems, who often sort plastic by hand without protective equipment and are exposed to toxic smoke, sharp materials, infections, and hazardous chemicals.
 
In some cases, weak oversight and profitable waste trade networks have also created opportunities for illegal activity. In Italy, for example, environmental crime networks often referred to as the “ecomafia” (linked in part to groups such as the Camorra) have been documented in illegal waste trafficking and dumping. While this is not representative of the legal waste industry, it illustrates how waste flows can be exploited when regulation and enforcement are weak.
 
While the situation has improved compared to previous decades, global plastic waste trade still places environmental and health burdens on communities that are least responsible for producing the waste.

Plastic pollution hotspots: From ocean garbage patches to polluted rivers and beaches

Plastic pollution is now visible across the planet—from crowded coastlines to remote ocean gyres. One of the most striking examples is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a vast accumulation of floating plastic debris trapped by ocean currents between Hawaii and California. It is estimated to cover an area larger than many countries combined and contains tens of thousands of tonnes of plastic, much of it broken into microplastics that form a dense “soup” in the water rather than a solid mass. These tiny fragments are widely dispersed throughout the water column and are almost impossible to remove, making cleanup efforts extremely difficult even if larger debris can be collected.
 
Plastic pollution is also concentrated in major river systems that carry waste from land to sea. Some of the most heavily affected rivers include the Yangtze in China, the Indus in Pakistan, the Ganges in India, the Niger in West Africa, and the Mekong in Southeast Asia.
 
Alongside rivers, many coastal areas are overwhelmed by plastic waste, with beaches in places such as Bali regularly experiencing seasonal waves of plastic debris washing ashore. These shorelines can become visibly coated in bottles, packaging, and fragments of plastic, affecting local ecosystems and sometimes deterring tourism as polluted beaches clash with expectations of clean tropical destinations.

Ghost gear (discarded fishing gear) is the deadliest marine plastic

Ghost gear – lost or abandoned fishing equipment - is killing huge numbers of marine animals every year and is a major source of plastic waste in the oceans harming fish populations, coral reefs, and marine ecosystems. According to environmental groups, more than 100,000 whales, dolphins, seals, turtles, and seabirds die annually in agony after becoming trapped in abandoned plastic nets, ropes, and fishing lines. Because the gear is made largely from plastic and nylon, it can remain in the sea for centuries, continuing to trap and kill animals long after being abandoned. Many animals drown, starve, or suffer severe injuries after entanglement.
 
Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of fishing gear are estimated to be lost or abandoned in the oceans every year, much of it originating from industrial fishing operations that supply major seafood companies around the world. In severe storms, fishers are sometimes forced to abandon equipment. However, much ghost gear also comes from illegal fishing, where unregulated crews trying to avoid detection may discard gear at sea and use unmarked equipment.
 
The problem is not only industrial—it also happens locally. Fishing gear lost or thrown away by hobby anglers can trap, injure, and kill fish and other wildlife in rivers, lakes, and coastal waters. Hooks, nylon lines, and sinkers often sink or drift out of sight, turning these waters into hidden dangers.

Many animals mistake plastic for food, often with fatal consequences. Seabirds are especially vulnerable: balloons and soft plastics can be mistaken for prey like squid and are disproportionately deadly because they block digestive systems, cause internal damage, and lead to starvation. In some cases, plastics may even resemble or smell like food, increasing the risk of ingestion. Microplastics are also consumed by plankton, which are eaten by fish and other marine animals, allowing plastic particles to move up the food chain and potentially reach humans through seafood.
 
For example, a Cuvier’s beaked whale found in Norway was discovered with around 30 plastic bags in its stomach, which prevented it from feeding properly and caused extreme suffering. On Lord Howe Island, seabird chicks have been found starving because their stomachs are filled with plastic fed to them by their parents, with conservation teams sometimes needing to remove plastic directly to save them.
 
Some birds also use plastic as part of their nesting material, which has led to chicks becoming entangled in fishing nets and dying.

The most common plastic waste: Cigarette butts

Cigarette butts are one of the most widespread and underestimated forms of plastic pollution in the world, consistently ranking as the most commonly collected item in global beach clean-ups. Each year, an estimated trillions of cigarette filters are discarded worldwide, with studies suggesting up to two-thirds of smoked cigarettes are littered rather than properly disposed of.
 
The filters are made of cellulose acetate, a plastic that does not biodegrade, but instead slowly breaks down into microplastics while releasing toxic chemicals such as nicotine and heavy metals into soil and water. Once in the environment, rain and runoff carry these pollutants into rivers and oceans, where they are ingested by wildlife and enter food webs. Far from being harmless waste, every discarded cigarette butt becomes a long-lasting source of both plastic and chemical pollution—making prevention and proper disposal essential.

Microplastics can be found everywhere

Microplastics are very small plastic particles, typically defined as pieces of plastic less than 5 millimetres in size. Microplastics are now found virtually everywhere on Earth. They have been detected in the air we breathe, in rain and snow, in Arctic ice, and in the deepest parts of the oceans, including the Mariana Trench. They have also been found in remote mountain regions such as the Himalayas, as well as in food and drinking water. Even inside the human body, microplastics have been detected in organs such as the lungs, liver, blood and heart. Microplastics have also been detected in human ovarian follicular fluid, the environment in which egg cells develop.
 
Microplastics come from both direct and indirect sources. Some are intentionally manufactured as tiny particles, such as industrial abrasives and certain cosmetic uses. Tyre wear is considered one of the largest sources of microplastic pollution, accounting for a significant share of emissions to the environment. Particles are released particularly in urban driving conditions such as traffic lights and roundabouts, where stop-and-go movement increases friction. These particles accumulate on road surfaces, from where rainwater washes them into drains and further into waterways. Wear from road surfaces and, to a lesser extent, abrasion of shoe soles are also additional sources of microplastics.
 
Microplastics are also formed indirectly when larger plastic items break down over time through sunlight, wave action, and physical wear. Everyday sources also include synthetic textiles shedding fibres during washing and the degradation of plastic waste in the environment. Once released, these particles are extremely persistent and are easily transported through air, water, and soil systems across the globe.

Health impacts of microplastics: What we know so far

Microplastics are now found practically everywhere. This means exposure is widespread and largely unavoidable, raising concerns about the long-term effects on human health.
 
One key issue is that microplastics can enter the body through both ingestion and inhalation. Studies suggest that a significant share of the microplastics people consume may come not only from food and drinking water, but also from synthetic fibres shed by clothing and household textiles. These fibres accumulate in indoor dust and can settle onto food before it is eaten. The smallest microplastic particles may pass through biological barriers and reach tissues and organs, where they could trigger inflammation or immune responses. While research is still ongoing, scientists are actively investigating potential effects on gut, lung, and cardiovascular health.
 
Another concern is the chemicals associated with plastics. Microplastics can contain or carry substances such as phthalates, bisphenols (like BPA), and PFAS-related compounds, which are linked to hormone disruption and other potential health effects. They can also absorb toxic pollutants from the environment and release them inside the body after exposure.
 
Although the full health impact in humans is not yet fully understood, the combination of physical particles and chemical exposure makes microplastics a growing concern in environmental health research.

Future prospects: Tackling the plastic pollution crisis

Plastic production continues to increase worldwide, while only a small percentage of plastic waste is recycled. Without major changes, the amount of plastic entering the environment is expected to keep growing in the coming decades. Many scientists and environmental organisations therefore argue that reducing plastic production is just as important as improving waste management and recycling.
 
A global treaty to end plastic pollution has been under negotiation through the United Nations, but reaching an agreement has proven difficult. One of the main obstacles is disagreement over whether countries should limit plastic production itself. Oil-producing nations and parts of the plastics industry have opposed strict production caps, slowing progress toward a binding global solution.
 
At the same time, alternatives to conventional plastics are becoming more common. Reusable packaging systems, paper- and fibre-based materials, and some plant-based bioplastics are already being used in a growing number of products. However, no single alternative can replace plastic in all applications, making reduction, reuse, and recycling essential.
 
Efforts are also underway to remove plastic that has already accumulated in the oceans. For example, the Ocean Cleanup has developed systems to collect floating debris from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
 
While these projects can help reduce existing pollution, experts agree that preventing plastic waste from entering rivers and oceans in the first place remains the most effective solution. The plastic crisis can only be tackled if governments, businesses, and consumers work together to reduce plastic waste and pollution.

What you can do

While governments and businesses play a major role in tackling plastic pollution, individual actions also matter. Reducing the use of single-use plastics, choosing reusable bags, bottles, and food containers, and recycling correctly can help cut plastic waste. Avoiding products that contain microplastics, choosing natural-fibre clothing when possible, choosing products with less packaging, and disposing of cigarette butts and other litter properly can also reduce pollution. People can also make a difference by participating in beach, river, and nature clean-ups, which help remove plastic before it breaks down into microplastics or reaches waterways.
 
Just as importantly, citizens can put pressure on politicians and companies to take stronger action by voting, supporting environmental organisations, signing petitions, and demanding stronger policies on plastic reduction and waste management.
