Environment – Why nature, animals and ecosystems matter

The environment is everything around us

The environment is everything around us: forests, rivers, oceans, wildlife, air, climate, soil, and even the ecosystems that support all life on Earth. Humans are part of nature, not separate from it. A healthy environment provides clean air, fresh water, food, medicine, stable climates, and spaces where people and animals can thrive.

Modern environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, habitat destruction, and biodiversity loss are affecting ecosystems across the planet. Scientists warn that many species are disappearing at an unusually rapid rate due to human activity, often referred to as the “sixth mass extinction.” Protecting the environment is therefore not only about saving nature — it is also about protecting human health, wellbeing, and future generations.

Why the environment is important for human wellbeing

Nature has a major impact on both physical and mental health. Clean air and water are essential for survival, while forests, parks, wetlands, and oceans help regulate the climate and reduce pollution. Spending time in nature can lower stress, improve mood, increase concentration, and support overall wellbeing.

Healthy ecosystems also protect society in practical ways. Forests absorb carbon dioxide, wetlands reduce flooding, insects pollinate crops, and oceans regulate global temperatures. When ecosystems are damaged, both humans and animals suffer the consequences.

Animals and biodiversity

Animals are a vital part of the environment. Every species plays a role in maintaining balanced ecosystems. Predators regulate populations, pollinators help plants reproduce, and countless organisms contribute to healthy soils and clean water systems.

Today, many animals face serious threats from habitat destruction, road traffic, plastic pollution, climate change, overfishing, deforestation, and light pollution. Some species are pushed closer to extinction every year. Protecting biodiversity is essential because ecosystems become weaker and less stable when species disappear.

Environmental threats facing the planet today

Today, the environment faces many serious threats caused largely by human activity. Climate change is leading to rising temperatures, extreme weather, melting ice, droughts, wildfires, and rising sea levels, while pollution is damaging the air, water, and soil across the planet. Plastic waste and chemical pollution are harming ecosystems and animals both on land and in the oceans. At the same time, forests, wetlands, coral reefs, and other natural habitats are disappearing because of deforestation, urban expansion, agriculture, mining, and infrastructure development. These pressures are contributing to a rapid decline in wildlife populations and biodiversity, often referred to by scientists as the sixth mass extinction.

Hope for the future

People can help protect the environment through everyday choices such as reducing waste, conserving energy, protecting wildlife habitats, supporting sustainable products, and choosing a more plant-based or vegan lifestyle, which can significantly reduce environmental impact and animal suffering. Learning about environmental issues and making conscious decisions in daily life can also make a difference. Around the world, scientists, activists, communities, and young people are working together to create a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future.
